It is my pleasure to welcome you to the launch issue of Aesthetic Update, the new journal from the publishers of Dental Update.
Dentistry has changed dramatically in recent years, the range of treatments has increased, the technology used has improved, and expectations from patients have grown exponentially. This journal will help readers wishing to explore the world of aesthetic dentistry, and support them with the first-class content one would expect from the Update brand. It will provide best-practice guidance to elevate understanding, knowledge and clinical skills to help deliver beautiful, functional and long-term outcomes for your patients.
Aesthetic Update and its associated multimedia resources (available at www.aesthetic-update.co.uk) will focus on a wide range of aesthetic treatments, offering evidence-based clinical tips and insights in the latest materials, equipment and technologies for optimising aesthetic procedures in everyday practice. Whether you are already providing aesthetic treatments, or are planning to extend your scope of practice in the near future, this is the journal for you.
To ensure the highest levels of educational content, Aesthetic Update is overseen by a renowned and highly respected editorial board of dental professionals, with career-long interests in aesthetic dentistry and postgraduate education. All clinical content provided by the journal will be subject to rigorous peer-review, and GDC-compliant enhanced CPD will be provided for readers, both in print and online.
This first issue will be followed by two further publications this year (July and November) and will then be published on a quarterly basis from 2025.
In the first issue, we include a two-part series on tooth anatomy, written by the late Louis Mackenzie with step-by-step wax carving guides, to highlight that a knowledge and understanding of posterior tooth anatomy is a key skill in dentistry. Reena Wadia has written on aesthetic crown lengthening surgery and this surgical procedure is commonly used to achieve optimal overall aesthetics. Shiraz Khan details the management of a patient with hypoplastic maxillary anterior teeth using minimally invasive tooth whitening, resin infiltration and direct adhesive restorative techniques. The penultimate article provides an overview of the physics of light, and how colours are perceived by the human eye and provides tips on how the clinician can achieve best results when ‘taking the shade.’ In the final article of the issue, Andrew Chandrapal details a re-attachment workflow in two cases of dental trauma.
It would be wrong of me to talk about the launch of Aesthetic Update without mentioning the input from a dear friend, Louis Mackenzie, who passed away after a short illness before Christmas. Louis was a supremely talented primary care practitioner, a skilled educator, a selfless mentor and a prolific author. It was Louis' passion for delivering first-class dentistry that has guided the launch of this initiative, and he was the driving force behind it.
We aim to build on his undoubted legacy by providing the best possible support and guidance to you through this exciting new journal. We dedicate this issue to him.
